Selection criteria and guidelines

For the TAFE and Higher Education Teaching Awards, the selection criteria are those that apply to the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development’s Victorian Training Awards and the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) Citations, respectively. For all other Awards, two equally-weighted selection criteria apply, viz.:

• Current/future benefit to the University
• Current/future benefit to University stakeholders

Management and coordination of the Awards process is the responsibility of the Strategic Planning & Quality Unit. Self-nomination and/or nomination by others apply to all Award categories, and most Awards are open to either individuals or teams. All nominations require endorsement by the nominees’ relevant Dean, in the case of the Higher Education Teaching Awards, and, for all other Awards, endorsement is required from the nominees’ manager or another appropriate senior manager.

1.

Nominations are sought in September- October 2008, with a closing date of Friday 31 October 2008.

2.

Nominees (individual or team) may nominate in a maximum of two Award categories.

3.

Selection panels will convene during November 2008 and recommend Award ‘winners’ to the Vice-Chancellor – up to the number allowed in each category, and according to the relevant selection criteria.

4.

The Vice-Chancellor will determine the Award winners, on the basis of advice provided by the selection panels.

5.

Awards will be presented at a function held early in 2009.

6.

Some Award winners will be supported to develop more comprehensive applications to meet the requirements of relevant state and/or national awards.

7.

For 2008, Awards will have a monetary value of $1,000 to $3,000 to be deposited in an appropriate extraneous account and used for such things as professional development or resource acquisition in support of the winner’s future work at Swinburne.

Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching Award (Higher Education)

Up to three Awards ($3000 per Award) including up to one Award for an early career teacher.

Staff from Swinburne's Australian and Sarawak campuses (including sessional staff) are eligible to apply. The Early Career Teacher category is for individual applicants only. For the other two Awards, both individual and team applications will be accepted, and team applications may include members who are not academics.

The five selection criteria are the same as for those used in ALTC Citations. For more details on these, see the ALTC Guidelines at http://www.altc.edu.au/carrick/go/home/awards/pid/64

The Early Career Award is open to staff with no more than seven years’ teaching experience in a higher education setting. (This should be interpreted as seven consecutive calendar years and includes all tutoring, part-time teaching, and teaching at other higher education institutions.)

Nominees will be asked to provide a letter of support from the relevant Dean, and for team applications a letter of support from the Faculty Dean of the lead applicant; and summaries of data from recent Student Feedback on Unit and/or Student Feedback on Teaching surveys.

Selection criteria

Nominees are required to select one or two of the following selection criteria, determined by the nature of their contribution to student learning:

- approaches to teaching and to learning that influence, motivate and inspire students to learn
- development of curricula, resources and services that reflect a command of the field
- approaches to assessment, feedback and learning support that foster independent learning
- respect and support for the development of students as individuals
- scholarly activities and service innovations that have influenced and enhanced learning and teaching

Applications will be judged on the quality of the nomination against the chosen selection criteria and the extent to which there is evidence (in the written statement) that one’s contribution has:

  1. influenced student learning, student engagement or the overall student experience
  2. gained recognition from fellow staff, the institution, and/or the broader community
  3. been sustained over time.

Selection panel

Recommendations will be determined by a panel comprising the Dean (Learning & Teaching) (Chair), the Swinburne Professional Learning Associate Dean (Academic Liaison), a Deputy Dean and an Education Development Coordinator from the Faculties, an academic who has been awarded an ALTC Award or Citation, and one external member.
