Swinburne again named one of the world's top 500 universities
Swinburne has again earned its place among the top 500 universities in the world, according to the 2009 Times Higher Education–QS World University Rankings.
The world rankings set out to give an up-to-date and rounded assessment of the world’s leading universities and – at a time of unprecedented mobility in international education – are seen with increasing importance by students and academics alike.
The rankings are determined by academic peer review, employer survey, student faculty ratio, research performance and the proportion of each institutions international faculty and international student numbers.
Australia’s top entrepreneurs honoured
Some of the country’s best and brightest entrepreneurs were recognised in July when they were inducted into the Powercor Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship (AGSE) Entrepreneur Hall of Fame.
Now in its fifth year, the AGSE Hall of Fame aims to honour Australians who have made a significant contribution to their field through entrepreneurial skill and talent.
On July 22, business and community leaders gathered at the Park Hyatt in Melbourne to celebrate this year’s group of inductees which, according to AGSE Director Professor Murray Gillin, was one if the most diverse groups yet.
“We are recognising entrepreneurs who have been very successful in business and the community. They come from an array of fields including community housing, technology, manufacturing and government,” he said.
The event incorporated the Annual Richard Pratt Entrepreneur Oration, which this year was delivered by CEO of the Australian Football League, Andrew Demetriou.
During his oration, Demetriou discussed how the AFL’s community involvement underpins its success and how Australian Football can be, and is, a vehicle for social change. He also discussed Richard Pratt’s legacy in football and in the community.
According to Gillin, this year’s Richard Pratt oration held a special significance given his recent passing. “We are proud to honour one of Australia’s most influential entrepreneurs, who not only brought about significant business development, but also contributed enormously to the community, in particular to Swinburne as our foundation chancellor,” he said.
The 2009 Powercor AGSE Entrepreneur Hall of Fame inductees are:
- Mr Bob Beaumont, CEO Beauchamp Pty Ltd, for his entrepreneurial mentoring and investment in start-up companies
- Mr Darryl Argall, Former Councillor and Mayor of Hindmarsh Council, for his championing of environmental issues in local government
- Mr Bruce McKenzie CEO, Goodwin Aged Care Services Pty Ltd, for his work in providing suitable housing for the elderly and people with disabilities
- Mr Greg Stokes, Co-Inventor and CEO Barokes Wine, for developing the Vinsafe wine packaging system that allows premium wine to be canned with longevity
- Mr Pat Boland and Mr Pat McCluskey Founders, ANCA Pty Ltd, for co-founding the world’s leading CNC Tool and Cutter Grinder manufacturing company
- Ms Kirsty McCarthy, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Inference Communications, for her role in developing a leading speech recognition technology company.
The AGSE is the graduate business school of Swinburne University of Technology.
Inductees into the AGSE Hall of Fame are chosen from leading business, corporate and social entrepreneurs. Selections are made by the AGSE Advisory Board.
