Student Benefits

Swinburne offers a broad range of postgraduate courses - from graduate certificates to PhDs - that will provide you with everything you need to establish, further or even change your career.

Designed to give you more control over what you study and more one-on-one interaction with academics, teachers and peers, Swinburne postgraduate studies are geared to the real world and enhancing your prospects of success in it.

Some of the many reasons why you should choose postgraduate study at Swinburne include:

Expanded Career Opportunities

Many Swinburne postgraduate courses will create career pathways that simply aren't available to graduates without such a qualification. That means that you'll benefit from postgraduate study no matter whether you're looking to start your career at a more advanced level, progress to a higher position or make a total career change.

A postgraduate qualification can add weight to a CV - many employers will take the completion of a postgraduate degree to represent an advanced level of maturity and proficiency, giving you an edge when it comes to job interviews. Other qualities that postgraduate students are recognised for include professionalism, resilience, resourcefulness and patience.

Upgraded Skills

Swinburne postgraduate courses build the type of hands-on skills that businesses are looking for - teamwork, analysis, negotiation, problem-solving and research to name just a few.

Graduate Certificates

A Swinburne Graduate Certificate is a smart option for those looking to fill a skills gap or improve upon existing knowledge.

A selection of Graduate Certificates are delivered by Swinburne TAFE and are ideally suited to those looking to advance their established career whilst formalising their professional expertise.

These vocationally-based courses generally take no more than a year of part-time study to complete and are offered across an array of study areas. Most offer evening or weekend classes and some offer an online delivery mode.

Flexible Entry

Swinburne offers flexible entry into postgraduate studies for applicants who have several years of industry experience, but who have no formal undergraduate qualifications.

Strong Business and Industry Links

Swinburne was a pioneer of Industry-Based Learning in Australia, with the first courses offered to undergraduate engineering students in 1963. Over the years these strong links with industry have spread to other disciplines in the university, and are reflected through our highly-relevant courses. Swinburne postgraduate students graduate with both advanced theoretical knowledge and the skills that employers are seeking.

In fact, many Swinburne postgraduate students will have an opportunity to undertake supervised project work, addressing key issues in a real world environment, or to work on projects with their own employers.

Employer Sponsorship

At Swinburne we encourage employers to sponsor their employees in further study. Our postgraduate courses are geared towards real-world learning that benefits both you and your organisation. Your employer will benefit from your enhanced skills and up-to-date knowledge. Also, because postgraduate coursework is closely involved with industry, you will undertake project work in authentic conditions and, where appropriate, may work on projects with your own employer.

As a student you will gain the skills and knowledge needed to further develop your career, with your employer covering the costs for some or all of your professional development.

Professional Recognition and Accreditation

Many of Swinburne’s postgraduate courses are recognised by professional organisations, meaning that your qualification will be highly regarded in industry and will further enhance your career opportunities.

A selection are also officially accredited by industry peak bodies, with completion of certain courses entitling graduates to membership of some of Australia's most highly-regarded organisations.

Nested Suite of Courses

Swinburne provides students with flexible entry and exit points through our nested suite of courses.

A good example is the Master of Business (Marketing) which comprises three study levels - Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters. As an earlier stage must be completed before a student can move to the next one, the system gives students a chance to assess what level of study they are comfortable at, while knowing they will receive a qualification whether they complete one, two or three stages.
